We usually meet at 9:30am at a central location near Matlock Bath. We will send out a map and directions in advance. There may not always be toilets at the meeting point so do stop at one of the many public facilities in the Peak District on your way to meet us.
After a short introduction and a quick check you have the essentials for the trip, we'll drive off in convoy to the cave nearby where you’ll change into the caving gear and head underground.
Depending on group numbers and ability, you’ll finish around 12:30pm.
No prior caving/mining experience is required, just the desire to push your own boundaries and experience something new. These trips are moderate physical activity, if unsure please contact us to discuss individual suitability.
You will be required to crawl at times and possibly lay on your stomach, but will never need to ‘squeeze’ unless choosing to.
You may walk through knee deep water but will never need to swim or be submerged.
We may scramble up short climbs or over boulders.
Expect to be in a cold, wet environment. Clothing advice will be sent to you after booking.

Join Peak Instruction on a journey back in time to experience the history and geology of one of the Peak District’s abandoned mines. You’ll spend time underground learning how the miners extracted the valuable ore and experience some challenges along the way.
No previous experience is needed and this activity can be enjoyed by anyone 10 years old or above. The exploring can be quite physical, but normal fitness levels will be fine. A certain amount of crawling is part of the experience, but kneepads are provided.
This 2-3 hour mine exploration activity will involve a trip into a local mine system. Depending on which mine we visit on the day, you may come across short scrambles, flowing water, sticky mud and even the option to try some challenges or longer, more physical sections of mine passage.
A Discover Mining Trip is perfect for anyone who has never experienced a mine or even been underground before. It’s ideal for families, individuals or small groups wanting to discover what mine exploration is really like without committing to a full day underground. Our aim is to give you a friendly introduction to the sport in a relaxed setting where harder challenges are your choice to take part in or not. We keep our groups small, so it feels like a very personal service, you’ll be part of group of up to a maximum of 8 people to 1 instructor.
Get a real insight into the history and geology beneath your feet as we take you into the fascinating world of abandoned mines.
